| Customer Reviews: best value and product on the market August 23, 2010 Daniel Benedict (burlington vt) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
It should be noted Amazon and all other E-sellers I found have the wrong images shown. The photos listed show a monochromatic silver netbook but in fact it is mostly black. Only the lid is silver, the rest (keyboard, bezel, bottom and battery), are all black. I would have preferred the mono look but am not fussy enough to send it back--the basic computer is worth keeping color aside. I specifically own the Acer Aspire One AO532H-2575 model that I purchased from Amazon. Through my work I have used just about every brand and model sold in the netbook world--I change computers about every 3 months. Acer also sells this model re-branded under the Gateway name tag.
Of all the Brands including Asus, Dell, HP, Sony, Toshiba, MCI etc, Acer leads the way in value and quality.
Acer over other brands:
Acer has user accessible RAM, HDD and WWAN bays.
Acer has best in class touchpad (opinion)
Acer has best value (most for the least $)
Acer BIOS and recovery software
Acer design and construction quality
As far as warranty and customer service is concerned, (which is independent of the product), I have heard horror stories on every company. As PC companies out source this department it is not uncommon to get inexperienced foreign reps who know nothing about what they are trying to help with. Since I don't have any personal experience with this as I am pretty computer literate and at the prices these netbooks sell for I consider them disposable anyways, I'm not going to judge this computer on intangibles.
The first thing I do with all my netbooks is drop in a Crucial 2GB Ram stick (quite easy with this model), and then remove and clone the small and slow HDD before powering up the netbook, (also very easy), In this case I installed a 250GB 7,200RPM WD Scorpio Black. The AO532H-2575 runs Win XP Home which I prefer over Win 7 Starter. I find it faster and less consuming of resources. The only drawback I find, which is true with most netbooks is the 1024 pixel screen. At this resolution any program that has a window of 1000 or more pixels (web surfing), will require scrolling from side to side. A minor nuisance.
This is my 12th different Acer model with a screen of under 11.6 inches in the last 2 years and I will be back every time for my next one. Only Dell with their Mini 1012 comes in second but loses due to requiring complete tear-down for HDD and Ram upgrades. HP 210 comes in dead last with many hardware issues (although it also has easy access to ram, wwan, and hdd), and Sony second to last with their inflated pricing and poor material choices.
In short any Acer Aspire One model will do you good and not disappoint. Acer Aspire One AO532H-2575 10.1 Inch Netbook - Silver Matrix
